Copyright – ALPINE ACRES PUBLISHING – 2017 Steel Horse Saviors is about three Civil War veterans, two Yankees and one Rebel, who take their steam locomotive west to seek their post-war fortune. In the process they encounter Clementine O’Grady a auburn-haired beauty fighting to save the family business who throws their grand plan of escaping their past into disarray.
Julius Kenner loves one thing, making money. He is a third generation banker, having benefitted from his father’s large operation in Cincinnati by getting the chance to bring the family business west. His landing in Penley river was no accident. Whispers about the potential for growth here made their way into his father’s ear, so he sent his eldest packing during the height of the War Between the States, as much to prevent his being drafted as to get in on the beginning of the growth.
As the only bank in the region Kenner can set his terms. This is something Clementine constantly voices her displeasure with, but cannot change. Clementine also feels the disadvantage of being an attractive woman trying to run a business when she hears the way Kenner talks to her differ from his conversation with any other man, especially Quentin Rollins.
Here is an excerpt:
“Miss O’Grady, what can I do for you this fine day?”
“You can extend my credit so I can upgrade my facilities.”
“I am afraid you have me at a loss. What factors have changed since our last discussion concerning your credit line?”
“My goal to capture the Carlisle contract for Harrington. When that occurs I expect to double my production within the first ten days. I need to make sure my equipment and operation are up to full capacity.”
“If you sign that paper and when you do, I will be happy to discuss that arrangement Miss O’Grady.”
