Copyright – ALPINE ACRES PUBLISHING – 2017 Steel Horse Saviors is about three Civil War veterans, two Yankees and one Rebel, who take their steam locomotive west to seek their post-war fortune. In the process they encounter Clementine O’Grady a auburn-haired beauty fighting to save the family business who makes them rethink their grand plan to escape their past.
One of the main themes of Steel Horse Saviors is the various pasts that each Steel Horse Savior is trying to escape. In war both sides have to do things that in a civilized society are at the least reproachable and usually unforgivable. Each of the three Saviors has such a past they seek to evade. Will their new home in Penley River be far enough across the U.S.A. to allow them the freedom to build new lives?
A history in the U.S.A. Army should mean that Finn and Nolan don’t have as much to worry about as “Brou”. But those with power want to exact their revenge on the heroes, know matter how far they have wandered or how true their intentions in post-war America. Even as they work to help Clementine O’Grady save O’Grady Timber and Lumber, the Saviors are always looking over their shoulders.
Here is an excerpt:
Finn could hear the voices; the wailing. Mothers and children begging them to just leave their farm alone. There was no men about, save the pre-teen and younger ones not yet old enough to hold a weapon. So they had no opposition to their pillaging. Whatever they needed they took. Finn was good at the task assigned by Gus Owens. Too good he knew after a short time.
Now he was paying a big price. The nightmares used to come to visit every night at the height of the war. After he managed to escape the day to day horrors they ebbed away to every other week or so. But now the frequency increased again. He wanted to know if “Brou” or Nolan had the same trouble, but during all the time they had logged as a team no one had dared broach the subject. No, that was a weakness none of them would entertain.
Come back tomorrow to read about Finn Honeycut, the man that puts the Saviors together.
